No fewer than thirteen passengers perish and 98 wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a route constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.

“We will meticulously determine the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's strategic goals for the southern region.

Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns

The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were completed at an accelerated pace, beating predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this accelerated timeline had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition called for an immediate pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This pause was requested pending a full independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for swift accountability."

In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
